The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has declared he is withdrawing from the Irish presidential election immediately.

He was poised to be among three contenders vying for the Irish presidency, beside Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys.

However, late Sunday he announced via a statement that he "committed an error inconsistent with his values and his personal standards."

"Considering all these factors, I've resolved to withdraw from the presidential race immediately and go back to my family," he stated in a statement.

Additional details to come.
